Healing from the Roots - Natural Ways to Encourage Hair Regrowth

If you've noticed your hair is thinning, you're waking up with strands on your pillow, or you're developing small bald spots, then I'm sure you're worried. And rightly so!

I never quite understood what my clients with hair loss were going through until my own hair started falling out after I had been terribly ill. You can read about that and other common causes of hair loss in my blog here >

Unfortunately, there's no quick solution, but there are natural ways you can gently, slowly encourage your hair to regrow. Please note the use of the word slowly - hair takes a long time to grow and no matter what treatment you choose, whether a medication or a natural remedy, the regrowth will be slow.

In this post, I’m going to share a few gentle, natural ways to encourage hair regrowth.

Nutrition to Encourage Hair Regrowth: Start with the Soil

I’m an avid gardener, and I often think of health and healing as being a lot like gardening. To grow healthy, beautiful plants, you need healthy soil (something a bit tricky to achieve here in Perth!). Just like plants, your hair needs “good soil” to grow from. That soil is your inner terrain, shaped by your nutrition and overall health.

The common causes of hair loss are all affected in one way or another by one’s diet. For example, a good diet can help the body recover from, or cope better with, illness, shock, stress, thyroid disorders, autoimmune disorders, or hormonal changes.

A diet rich in the following can support and encourage hair growth:

  • Protein, the basic component of hair: meat, eggs, legumes, fish, tofu, nuts, cheese
  • Iron and zinc, to help cellular repair and support the hair follicles: red meat, seeds, shellfish, chickpeas
  • Vitamin D, to support both the immune system and the hair cycle: oily fish, egg yolks (and a little time in the sunshine)
  • Folate and biotin, two vitamins necessary for the production of hair: leafy greens, citrus fruits, beans, almonds, sunflower seeds, egg yolks.

Biochemic Tissue Salts to Encourage Hair Regrowth

Tissue salts are gentle mineral remedies that help balance the body's internal environment by supporting your cells to absorb what they need and release what they don’t. There are quite a few different tissue salts that help encourage hair regrowth, but the three I find I use most often for clients with hair loss are:

  • Calc Phos (#2) - to support overall growth and vitality
  • Kali Phos (#6) - a wonderful nerve nutrient that helps with stress-related hair loss
  • Silica (#12) - for strengthening hair, nails, and connective tissue

Herbs to Encourage Hair Regrowth

Herbs are also powerful allies, especially when hair loss follows nutritional depletion, stress, illness, or hormonal changes. They work gently and slowly to rebalance the system and nourish the terrain in which your hair grows. Here are the ones I most often turn to in my clinic:

  • Equisetum - This is my favourite herb to rebuild and strengthen the hair. It is very rich in silica and is also called Horsetail - the name immediately brings to my mind thick, long, strong hair! I often combine it with a few other herbs, depending on the underlying cause of the hair loss. For example I may use:
  • Withania (Ashwagandha) – to support the thyroid and calm the nervous system
  • Burdock Root or Rosemary – to nourish the adrenals and balance hormones
  • Avena Sativa (Oats) – to soothe frazzled nerves and restore an over-stressed system.

Homeopathy to Encourage Hair Regrowth: Listening to the Deeper Story

My favourite treatment for hair loss is, of course, homoeopathy!

It quietly and gently supports the whole person and I'm often amazed at how powerful it is. I've tried different approaches when working with homoeopathic clients and what I've learned is that a constitutional remedy always works best.

Homoeopathy has a quiet strength. It doesn't just address the symptoms - it supports the whole person and the best results come when the remedy matches your unique story: the emotional patterns, physical signs, and life events that may have triggered your hair loss.

Be Gentle With Yourself

Hair loss can really shake you. It’s visible, intimate, and sometimes feels so unfair. But it’s also often temporary and a signal that your body is asking for help, rest, and nourishment.

So go slow. Eat well. Rest your nervous system. And trust that healing is possible. Your body is wiser than you think.
